Honestly?

Fender Bender

Read this dilemma that can open discussion about shades of truth. By the way, this episode really happened.

For a few months now you've been looking for and praying for a new electric guitar. You figure that you play well enough to warrant the investment. One Saturday morning your mom asks you if you want to go with her to check out the garage sales. Your first stop is the weed-infested yard of a small, shabby house, in front of which sits an elderly woman. As your mom browses for odds and ends, your eye catches a dusty guitar and amplifier sitting just inside the garage. You know guitars enough to know that this guitar-amp pair lists for around $1,300; you've seen them go for half that, used, in the classifieds. You have only dreamed of owning a guitar and amp like these.

You swallow hard before speaking to the woman, and try to sound casual. "How much are you asking for that guitar and amp over there?"

"Oh, I don't suppose it's worth much," she mutters. "It doesn't even have any strings on it anymore. It belonged to my son before he died in a swimming accident last year. You can have them both for $35. Are they worth that much to you?"

What do you do?

1. Reason that it is her responsibility to know the value of her merchandise; say, "Yes, I think they're worth that much to me. I'll take them;" pay her $35 for them; and thank the Lord for answered prayer.

2. Explain to her the market value of the guitar and amp.

3. Talk her down to $30.
